The reality of railway station buildings, railway tracks and their surroundings co-creates the clear boundaries of the concept of this year’s Festival m³ / Art in space. In their immediate vicinity, levels of meaning immediately emerge – social, political-aesthetic, architectural, historical, urban, ecological.
We can probably generally agree on the statement that the railway station environment is typical of a peculiar poetics. This is why, for example, in Jaroslav Rudiš’s recently published book, we can also encounter critical comparisons of today’s state-of-the-art railway stations to a “sparrow’s nest”, a “hospital autopsy room”, a “mouse hole made of glass and steel”, a “cemetery”, a “shopping mall”, a “horrendous department store”, a “marketplace”, a “circus tent”, and, in the opposite sense, a romantic memory of a railway station as a “cathedral of transport”. We absolutely understand the emotional colouring of these expressions because, from our own experience, we can easily recall stations that are tiny, oversized, designed for freight transport, insensitively modernised, abandoned, overgrown, closed and dilapidated. Behind these visible signs, however, there are usually more hidden levels, sometimes as a result of rather problematic processes.
The dilapidated ruins of railway station buildings can be indicative of a protracted solving of property rights to them. The lifeless neatness of the tracks is due to the repeated widespread application of poisonous herbicides. In the vicinity of railway stations and tracks, we encounter numerous uncontrolled zones, the so-called “new wilderness” (Jiří Sádlo), with the indeterminate identity of “empty spaces” (Michal Ajvaz), “vague terrains” (Radan Haluzík), which, however, can be characterised by an exceptionally diverse representation of plant species. The relationship between the city and investors in planning the use of such free/natural zones is often problematic, yet the ill-defined terrain can be intelligently and sensitively reflected and integrated into the urban space in an appropriate and urbanistic way in the important green areas of the city.

Iva Mladičová
Iva Mladičová studied at the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague. In 2007–2011, she prepared a monograph and a retrospective exhibition of Jan Kotík for the National Gallery in Prague. Since 2015, she has been a curator of the Showcase AXA Gallery in Prague and the Dům Gallery in Broumov, and has also prepared a number of exhibitions for other galleries and public spaces. She focuses mainly on contemporary sculpture. She is a co-author of the publications Sculpture 2 AVU 1990–2016 and Působit, klást překážky, vyjít vstříc. (Conversations with visual artists on how to teach art) and others. Since 2013, she has been teaching at Jan E. Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem and, since 2015, she has been teaching externally at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.
Dagmar Šubrtová
Dagmar Šubrtová lives and works in Kladno. She graduated from the Sculpture Studio of the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague under the direction of Kurt Gebauer. She worked at the studio as an assistant until 2013. In addition to her artistic profession, she is also involved in thematic curatorial projects such as Olga Karlíková / Audible Landscapes, UM Gallery (2012), and Jitka and Květa Válová /Under One Sky (2021). She was responsible for the dramaturgy of the exhibition programme of the Gallery of the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences in Prague (2001–2021). For several years she worked as a curator of the Mining Museum in the former Mayrau Mine in Vinařice. She has long monitored the transformation of the landscape as a result of ongoing industrialisation. The central themes of her work are the “no-man’s land” devastated by industry and the slag heaps of deep mines. She does not limit herself to reflection, but aims at a sculptural interpretation of newly emerging places within the so-called new wilderness which are physical examples of natural renewal. This can be seen, for example, in the Earth Dust exhibition at the Coal Mill gallery or in the installation Reclamation, ProLuka Gallery, Prague (2019), in the solo exhibition Stella Maris at the Central Bohemian Region Gallery (2020) and in the group exhibitions Vanitas, DOX Prague (2021), and Stasis Leak, Pragovka Gallery (2022). Since 2015, she has been working on the Na pomezí samoty / Frontiers of Solitude project, which explores current issues of landscape transformation and the interconnectedness of post-industrial society and nature. She is a co-author of the book Guide: Contemporary Artworks in the Landscape (with Radoslava Schmelzová and Radek Mikuláš, Academia, 2014). For a long time, she has taken care of the Válová Sisters’ Home and their work.

The phonon~ group is dedicated to organising quadrophonic concerts aimed at introducing contemporary trends in the field of electroacoustic music and sound art to those interested in the Ústí nad Labem region. Another of their activities is the organisation of workshops that mediate the phenomenon of sound and acoustic art to the public. All the members of the group have long been engaged in research and practice related to new media and innovative methods in the visual arts – spatial sound, interactive installations, live generated video projections. The founding members are: Polina Khatsenka (mʊdʌki), Iva Polanecká, Martin Marek, Jan Krombholz, Petr Hanžl.

Railway station restaurants, pubs and buffets are a specific subspecies of Czech catering establishments whose spirit is shaped, among other things, by the unpredictable fluctuation of guests. A morning gathering for a school trip and a group of wheeltappers enjoying a hot dog, a respectable family having lunch at the same table as professional down-and-outs, all this can happen in a railway station restaurant. Unlike restaurants and taprooms in urban areas, the traditional railway station is a highly democratic space, where no regard is paid to nationality, age, education or pay slip – when we miss the train, we all meet there. The authors of the blog vagus.cz will present, based on years of reviewing, the current situation facing Czech railway station restaurants in terms of expensive beer, the greedy claws of developers and people with no feeling for smoke-soaked romance.

Ivana Vodičková’s lecture will focus primarily on the development of the Festival m3 – Art in Space and its actions and interventions within the framework of the individual editions since its inception in 2017. She will also present the process of production work in the context of legislative regulations as well as the unwritten rules of public space as they are understood in the Czech environment. Last but not least, she will present the latest edition of the festival, subtitled Between Interspaces, which focuses on Prague and Central Bohemian railway stations and the indeterminate terrain around them.

Braník Soundwalks with P.Cusack
The meeting point is Braník Train Station and departures at 11 am and at 4 pm.
Braník Soundwalks invites you to explore the area in the company of sound artist Peter Cusack. We will listen to some of the connections between the landscape and soundscape in this historic part of Prague. The walks last approximately 75min and there will be time for observations and discussion during and afterwards.
Please bring good shoes, weather appropriate clothing and drinks.
The meeting point is Braník Train Station and departures at 11 am and at 4 pm.
Braník is situated beside the River Vltava on the city’s edge. The geography of the hills has concentrated much transport infrastructure into a narrow hub along the valley. There are busy roads, several rail lines on both sides, plus trams and other roads. Planes fly low overhead to land at Prague airport. Transport sounds play a big role in this area. But it is also an old industrial area with historic buildings (the ice factory, brewery). More recently it has become a recreation area with riverside cycle tracks, good playgrounds for kids, rowing/kayaking on the river, a golfing range and open spaces for walking or picnics. The hillsides are still forested, home for reasonably diverse wildlife. All of these bring their own sounds into the area, both urban and natural. There is also the spectacular Braník Bridge (part of the walk) that carries a railtrack and a footpath high across the valley. It is a fascinating mix. Please join us to explore the route both visually and sonically.

a sonic reminiscence for the former Denisovo Railway Station

The building of the former Denisovo Railway Station in Praha-Těšnov was one of three railway hubs in Prague. It was in operation from 1875 to 1972. Historians consider the building to have been one of the most valuable station buildings in Central Europe. On March 16, 1985, the dilapidated, damaged building was spectacularly blown up, due to its state of disrepair and to make more space for a new highway. This series of site-specific sonic interventions will take place in the public space where the building once stood, and so the event commemorates the disappearing world of remote railway terrains, the shrill screech of wagon brakes at night, the distant echoes of the station loudspeaker announcements and the beautiful, dark and mysterious culture of the “ajznbon” in general.

Walk through the Slatiny colony

The lecture will be held from 17:30 in the cultural center Vzlet (Holandská 669/1, P10) and will be followed by a walk through the First Republic colony of Slatina
Prague – like most cities – is increasingly dealing with negative phenomena such as rising temperatures, polluted air, excessive motoring, exceeding noise limits and urban standardization. According to the new Metropolitan Plan, parts of the existing greenery and parks in Prague, including the Bohdalec-Slatiny brownfield, will disappear or be built over. Gardening settlements and former workers’ colonies still represent a larger share of the green space of the big city today, but in recent decades they have been rapidly giving way to new development.
17:00 meeting at the statue of Peter Stibral with the title Monument to the Gardening Colony in Slatiny, which is part of the Festival m3 / Art in Space / Between Spaces. The statue is located in the park of Jiřina Hauková and Jindřich Chalupecký in front of the Prague-Vršovice train station.
17:30 Presentation and discussion in the Vzlet Cultural Center, where contributions will be made by, for example, Petr Stibral: Slatiny and Bohdalec from Michle’s perspective, Alena Dvořáková and Viktor Fischer: Emergency colony Slatiny, 1994–95, Petr Zewlakk Vrabec, Periphery of Prague (2021), Petr Gibas: Gardens: uncertain and non-obvious urban nature. Architect and urban planner from the Office of Public Space at the Institute of Planning and Development of Prague Rozálie Kašparová, representative of the Municipal District of Prague 3 and member of the Green Party and independent Matěj Michalk Žaloudek and other invited guests will participate in the discussion.
After the discussion, a joint visit to Slatin will take place.
Part of the program for Petr Stibral’s installation is a sound collage of noises from Slatin, which was compiled by a sound engineer and which can be heard from inside the statue. On the festival’s website, you can view samples from a series of documentary photographs from Slatin by photographer Petr Zewlakk Vrabec, or Alena Dvořáková and Viktor Fischer.

Second Part: Meeting at Masaryk railway station in Prague at the departure boards at 5:25 p.m. – viewing of the Locomotive installation by Lloyd Dunn, then we will take the train via Veleslavín station to see Vladimír Turner’s installation called Sustainable Mobility. We will take the train to Kladno to see Matěj Al-Ali’s installation What Was, What Will Be. We will have refreshments at Kladno railway station restaurant and take the train back to Prague.
Due to the extensiveness of the routes and places, we recommend a personal visit to Eliáš Dolejší’s installation entitled Pale Blue Covering at Prague-Reporyje railway station, combined with a visit to Studio Bubec and Bubec Garden. Similarly, we recommend that you combine a personal visit to Pavel Hošek’s Frame visualisation with a visit to Prague Modřany station and on the way see Michaela Thelenová’s postcards, which are available at the above-mentioned train stations. The audio tour of the artist Peter Cusack in the vicinity of Braník station can be accessed on the Festival m3 website, but we recommend a personal visit. It is a remarkable place. We will learn about the research records of Epos 257, Albert Šturma and Martin Netočný in the vicinity of Prague-Zličín station on 21 September in the debate What Will The Place Be Called? -35%

The debate will be attended by Petr Zeman – Chair of the Committee for Territorial Development, Urban Planning and National Heritage Protection at Prague City Hall and founder of the Empty Houses portal. Dan Merta, art historian, curator and director of the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery, Marek Adamov, representative of the Stanica Žilina – Záriečie cultural centre, Iva Mladičová and Dagmar Šubrtová, curators of the Festival m3, Michal Lehečka from the Laboratory of Sustainable Urbanism (AutoMat) and other guests will also take part in the debate.

Modern Times: An update of Chaplin’s Modern Times highlights the absurd dimension of technological progress, thanks to which humanity is not evolving, but rather becoming stunted. This fact is illustrated by hoverboards, which relieve us of the need to walk, and we partly become machines because of the prosthetic chassis. An identical interpretive key to the seriality and monotony of the modern world is offered by aerial views of a housing estate of identical turnkey houses. Machine-structured reality makes slaves of us all. “Modern times have changed significantly since the time of Charlie Chaplin. Chaplin, with his sensitivity to the world, would probably be dependent on Xanax today.” (V.T.)
